Ready to take your cartooning to the next level? This engaging one-day workshop is designed for students who have completed Cartooning Basics (or have equivalent experience) and are ready to expand their creative skills.

Building on the foundations of shape, expression and character construction, this course focuses on developing cartoon characters with greater personality, confidence and visual impact. Through practical demonstrations and guided drawing exercises, you’ll discover how body language, posture, clothing and props can transform a simple sketch into a memorable character.

You’ll also explore how cartoon characters interact with one another and learn simple visual storytelling techniques to create engaging cartoon scenes that communicate humour, emotion and action. The emphasis is on developing original ideas, strengthening observation skills and building confidence while encouraging students to experiment with their own creative style.

Whether you’re interested in creating comic strips, humorous illustrations, greeting cards or simply improving your cartooning skills, this relaxed and supportive workshop will provide practical techniques that are easy to understand and enjoyable to apply. By the end of the day, you’ll have created original cartoon characters and a finished illustration that demonstrates your growing confidence as a cartoonist.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Develop original cartoon characters with greater personality and visual appeal.
• Use body language, posture and facial expression to communicate emotion and attitude.
• Apply clothing, props and accessories to reinforce a character’s identity and occupation.
• Create interaction between two or more cartoon characters.
• Use simple visual storytelling techniques to communicate action, humour and narrative.
• Complete a finished cartoon illustration featuring original characters in a simple scene.

What to bring:

• A4 or A3 sketchbook or visual diary (plain paper preferred)
• HB and 2B or 4B graphite pencils
• Plastic or vinyl eraser
• Pencil sharpener
• Black fine-liner pens (0.5mm and 1.0mm or similar)
• 30cm ruler
• Optional coloured pencils or markers
• Examples of your favourite cartoons or characters (optional)
• Your imagination and enthusiasm!
