Workskills Smart and Skilled

Smart and Skilled

Smart and Skilled is the NSW Government's way of helping you get the skills you need for a real career. If you are eligible, the government pays part, and sometimes most, of your course fee, so you pay less.

St George & Sutherland Community College (RTO 7091) is approved to deliver a range of Smart and Skilled subsidised qualifications. This training is subsidised by the NSW Government. For the full official details, visit skills.education.nsw.gov.au

The programs we offer

  • Traineeships. Earn a wage while you train with an employer and study with us. Most new trainees receive a government subsidy for their qualification.
  • Full qualifications. Enrol in selected qualifications and, if you are eligible, have your training subsidised (through the Entitlement and Targeted Priorities programs).
  • Foundation skills. Build core reading, writing, numeracy, digital and employability skills for work and further study.
  • Adult and Community Education (ACE). Extra help to get into training if you face barriers to learning or work.

Am I eligible?

To study any Smart and Skilled course, you need to:

  • be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen
  • be 15 years or older
  • live or work in New South Wales
  • have left school.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who live in defined NSW border areas may also be eligible, even if they live or work interstate. ACE has extra eligibility rules (you will need to provide evidence). Not sure if you qualify? Just ask us and we will check.

What will I pay?

Your fee depends on your situation. The NSW Government sets the fees, and we work out yours from the details you give us. You might pay a first-qualification fee, a subsequent-qualification fee, or a lower concession fee if you are eligible. We will tell you your exact fee before you decide to enrol.

Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer can reduce your fee. Payment is due when you enrol. See the Smart and Skilled fee schedule 2026-2027 and the Fees, Withdrawal and Refund Policy

Before you enrol

  • Get your USI. You will need a Unique Student Identifier to enrol. Do not have one? We can help you get it, or apply yourself at usi.gov.au.
  • Sign a consent form. For most Smart and Skilled courses you will sign a form allowing us to share your information with the NSW Department of Education, and where required other government agencies. Download the consent form.
  • Do a quick skills check. You will complete a short Language, Literacy and Numeracy check so we can match you to the right course and support. Call us on 02 9528 3344 to book.

Already have skills or study behind you?

You may not need to do it all again.

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). We assess what you can already do against the course, using your evidence.
  • Credit Transfer (CT). If you already hold the same units (shown on a Certificate, Statement of Attainment or transcript), we can credit them.

Both can lower your fee. Talk to us before you enrol.

Changing your plans

Life happens. You can defer your course for up to 3 months from when you tell us. If you need to withdraw, let us know in writing.

Your rights

Your feedback and your rights matter to us. See our Consumer Protection Policy and the Smart and Skilled Consumer Protection Strategy. You can also contact the NSW Smart and Skilled Customer Support Centre on 1300 772 104 or visit skills.education.nsw.gov.au

Support while you study

We are here to help. Academic support, student and pastoral care, language, literacy and numeracy support, and careers guidance are all available on 02 9528 3344.

How you are assessed

Our qualifications are competency-based. For each unit you are marked Competent or Not Yet Competent, and you can re-submit. You need all units marked Competent to receive your qualification. See the Student Handbook - Assessment for more.
