Fiction Hit: Characters - New!
Are your characters feeling a little flat? Let’s bring them to life! In this fun, hands-on workshop, you will learn how to create vivid characters with compelling backstories, write convincing dialogue and discover your own unique voice. We will also explore which point of view is right for your story and character goals and motivations. Writers of all genres will benefit from this exciting masterclass.
This workshop is best suited for students with some prior writing experience and who have already completed a writing course. If you are just starting out, our 5 week ‘Beginners Creative Writing’ course is a great place to begin!
Course Outline:
This will be an in-depth dive into creating complex fictional characters:
- How to create a compelling backstory for your character
- Characterisation and how to use it effectively
- Internal and external character goals
- Point of view: how to use it appropriately for your chosen genre and audience
- Writing convincing dialogue and formatting it correctly
- Narrative voice and how to discover and refine yours

- Create complex, unique characters that come alive on the page
- Strategies to ignite your creativity and beat writer’s block
- Gain confidence in a supportive environment with an experienced tutor

- Pen and paper, or laptop/tablet

About the Tutor:
‘Aylish Dowsett is an award-winning writer, tutor, and copywriter. She teaches creative writing at The Writers’ Studio, The Writing Quarter, Creative Writing Ink, and SGSCC. Her work has been published in Mythrill Fiction, Collider, Honi Soit, Grapeshot, The Quarry, and many others. She loves cats and all things weird and British.'

- To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.
- All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those") . If your course does not have enough students it will be cancelled prior to the commencement and you will be informed.
